A lot of people do not know the legacies of Amina Abubakar, the wife of Atiku Abubakar. She has not been relaxing. In all of the conditions she has seen herself, she has used it to foster the right of the girl child all around the world. In truth, Amina is our hero. Why? We all have girl-children in our midst; whether as daughters, or sisters, friends, neighbors, school mates, nieces etc. You might be asking how she has fought for the girl child using her positions in life. Well, welcome to my vehicle of fact checked preview of her struggles for the girl child.
Amina as a private citizen, founded the Women Trafficking and Child Labor Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF). This became imperative, as the rate of girl-child trafficking increased in the 90’s. Titilayo took the initiative to found this body which advocated for women and child rights, as well as eradicating women trafficking and child labor. Amina was not only about the girl child. She was also interested in the manner the boy child was used for menial labor, when he was supposed to be in school. Her passion for the girl child and boy child, concerning issues unique to them, has endeared her to the nation. When the then first Lady, Stella Obasanjo, died, Nigerians needed a mother and Amina provided that comfort through her advocate for endangered groups of our society. Did it stop there? Absolutely not!
Just like her husband who went to Brazil and brought the act instituting the EFCC and sponsored it, Amina was the initiator of the private bill that established the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). It is clearly a family trait, to be innovative and always thinking about people-oriented initiatives to better the country. As such, Amina has been of more use to Children in Nigeria than some senators whose only interest is to satisfy their party and return for another four years. These, she achieved as a private citizen, because as the wife of the VP, she did not have an office of her own. She achieved all of these through her stipends and personal earnings. Titilayo remains the best gift of Yoruba people to Atiku Abubakar and Nigeria. The second best gift would be coming out on February 16th 2019, to vote in Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as President, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
